Why I’m Starting This Website: Building a Brand from Zero

Table Of Contents

My four-person team is building a wooden baby toy brand completely from scratch. We don’t have venture capital backing, and we don’t have a massive marketing department. Instead, the four of us each own a specific piece of the puzzle: one handles SEO and organic growth, another focuses entirely on influencer outreach, a third drives our UI design and visual identity, and I oversee the overall execution.

We are learning by doing—making mistakes, course-correcting, and moving forward. This blog is where I document that messy process. While I’m writing it primarily for myself, if you are also trying to build a brand with limited resources and no clear roadmap, you might find some useful takeaways here.

What We’re Working On Right Now

Our current focus spans three parallel tracks:

1. Brand Strategy & Positioning Analysis

This is the hardest part. We recently set aside a $4,500 budget and spent weeks vetting brand strategists on Upwork. From a long list of candidates, we’ve narrowed it down to a few freelancers with outstanding portfolios and highly relevant experience. We are now preparing to kick off our brand positioning project with them. Right now, we lack a clear brand story, and we know we have to nail this before scaling our marketing. Our goal is to bring in a professional freelancer to solidify our positioning and help guide our visual identity and user interface development.

2. Building a Social Proof Asset Library

A website launch needs to be backed by more than just pretty pictures and generic copy. We want authentic influencer reviews right out of the gate to serve as trust signals. As a team developing a mother-and-baby toy brand, we care deeply about honest feedback from parents. That is why we dedicated an entire role in our tiny team solely to influencer relations.

3. UI and Visual Identity Development

Though our brand is brand new, our team members are seasoned. Having helped build other brands in the past, we intimately understand how vital UI and VI are in the early stages. UI is the structural foundation of our website, while VI is how we tell our story visually to our users.

What You’ll Find Here

This blog is a real-time log of my daily work. You won’t find a polished editorial calendar or a rigid content strategy here—just raw, honest updates on our actual progress.

  • Building a Brand from Zero: How we approach positioning, messaging, and visual design for a physical consumer product; our experiences managing strategists and freelancers; and what happens when our experiments fail.
  • SEO Experiments: I will share the exact strategies, data points, and adjustments we test on our own storefront. I’ll provide macro trends and performance data wherever possible, without giving away trade secrets or proprietary data
  • Sourcing Social Proof: I’ll break down exactly how we find influencers, how we collaborate on video content, and how we maintain long-term relationships with creators.
  • Tools & Workflows: How we use scripts, low-cost tools, and free software to handle workloads that usually require an entire department. I’ll share what works and what completely wastes our time.

Who This Is For

I am writing this for people in the trenches: early-stage founders, lean team members, or anyone trying to build something from nothing on a tight budget without a playbook. If you’re looking for glossy case studies of highly successful corporations, this space isn’t for you. But if you want to see what the chaotic, challenging “middle phase” of building a business actually looks like, you’ll feel right at home.

Format & Update Frequency

Posts will be sporadic. I’ll write whenever something happens that is actually worth documenting—whether that’s wrapping up an experiment, fixing a critical issue, or making a costly mistake. Some posts will be short and highly technical; others will be deep dives into strategy. Everything will be rooted in my immediate hands-on work, not generic advice recycled from the internet.

Even if nobody reads this, it serves its purpose: a permanent record of how we built this brand piece by piece. If someone does read it and finds value in it, that’s a win.

Our Next Steps

Our immediate priorities are:

  • Finalizing the contract with our brand strategist and launching the positioning project.
  • Scouting niche creators in our vertical to secure review videos ahead of our launch.
  • Locking in the foundational UI and VI architecture for the brand.

I’ll share updates as these pieces start coming together.
